Of all the internal arts, it is said by many that tai chi is the most complex to master. The perfect balance of yin and yang require the ability to exert explosive force in one instant, then fade away from an opponent like smoke dissappearing on a gentle breeze the next. The most versatile tool to train these abilities is the practice of “push hands.” Push hands is an advanced multi-faceted tool designed to help the practitioner experience all the myrid tai chi
principles of movement and structure in a contest of subtle energies and techniques between two players. It is training that opens the door to full tai chi combat, and a practice that has risen to levels of international competition. In this arena, the highest level of principles, skill and sensitivity is put to the test. The experience is a lesson in itself.
In this two day workshop, Shifu William C. Phillips, a trainer of push hands champions, will share with you the push hands secrets of his teacher, the legendary Cheng Man Ching, a master who could move like smoke amongst his students, untouched but able to toss those around him through the air with ease. You will learn how to better apply the tai chi principles of body and movement to connect with, and flow and control the movement of your opponent. Shifu Schneier will then share is years of experience as champion and judge at the international level, teaching you the tip, tricks and techniques necessary to survive, thrive and win in any competitive arena. You will learn new foot patterns and movement, advanced neutralization techniques, and many of the strategies that the champions use to push their way to the gold.
Whether you are student who has never worked with push hands before, an old hand at the practice, or an old time competitor, this workshop will give you a wealth of new training and insights into this complex and exciting practice.
Join Shifu William C. Phillips and Shifu Avi Schneier, in this training intensive to push your skills to entirely new levels!

Chinese history states that after decades of study in the internal arts, the legendary master Wang Xiangzhai concluded that students, and even many of his fellow masters of the time, had lost the true essence internal training. He discovered that students paid undue attention to patterns and postures and neglected the training of the mind and spirit. Thus, to constantly remind his students of this misunderstanding, he changed Xingyiquan (form and mind boxing) to Yiquan (mind boxing). By Yi (will or mind) he meant that in practicing boxing, every movement must be guided by a certain idea.
When practiced in this way, the idea of boxing exists in every movement, whether it be walking, standing, sitting or even lying. The completely new form of boxing incorporated the completeness and solidness of Xingyiquan’s mechanism of force, the quintessence of qigong (breathing skills), Taijiquan’s four skills of attacking, sticking, joining and following as well as its soft style of exerting force and finally Bagua’s leisurely bodywork and flexible and changeable handwork and stepwork. In the mid-1940’s, the name of Dachengquan or Great Acheivements Shadow Boxing was adopted.
Dachengquan (Yiquan) is distinguished for its effective combat skills and its value for actual combat. The strength spoken of is not that produced by blood and muscles, but the living strength characterized by its ready availability achieved by the coordinated contraction and relaxation of all muscles with the mind in command. The practice of Dachengquan also has an important effect on health. Good health is preserved because the training of the mind and the body is done simultaneously, and quiet and active skills reside within the other. This distinguishes it from some other forms of breathing exercises that stress only the body or only the mind.
In this three day workshop, Wang, Rengang, second generation grandmaster of dachengquan, will teach the entire training methodology of the art. You will learn the secrets that Master Wang, Xiangzhai felt lost to his generation. You will learn, in a step-by-step progression, the exercises you need to train on your first day of training, to the advanced exercises you will practice as a seasoned student. Most importantly, Grandmaster Wang will teach you both the martial usuage and the health benefits of this wonderous art, offering something for everyone.
This workshop is perfect for the student looking to put the true “internal” into his or her internal art training, as well as the teacher looking to bring an entire new system of training back to his or her school. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to study with one of the great masters of our time in an art that captures the essence of the internal!
